For the longest time, my ‘default post category’ in WordPress has been ‘tech’ – a decision I made when I started writing more about my software work and ideas than anything else.
I realize now that that was a mistake. The default category should be general, so that when one starts writing, the immediate bent should not be towards technology but rather life.
It also allows me to permit myself to quickly open my blog and just post a photo. This is something I do not do, but want to.
So here it goes. Now the default category is set to general.
@nitinkhanna I understand why you did what you did. My default WordPress post category has always been General even though the initial website (2013) was mostly about technology. I have over 3000 posts under General and over 1000 under photography.
That tells me that I’ve made the right decision. I went into the system to change to general and for some reason, it didn’t exist! So I created it, so I start from zero today 😊
@www.nitinkhanna.com 👍🏾. I don’t have a technology category. Perhaps I will add that.
@www.nitinkhanna.com I also like that your responses are flowing to/from your website. IndieWeb FTW.
Boo yah! All thanks to MicroBlog’s awesome integration! I didn’t even know that was the case till I checked the m.b app!!
@nitinkhanna That’s a good idea. I’d quite like it if the default was not to have a category at all, but that doesn’t seem to be possible.
Or… I was going to say that mine is still set to “Uncategorized”, which I think is the default, and I don’t like, and I wish the default could be to have no category. But it seems that now the default is to have no category. I wonder when that changed.
Wait, new installs of WordPress allow for no category at all? That’s odd and interesting! I would love that. Uncategorized has always irked me as too ugly.
@devilgate categories (and tags) are important if I ever want to get a link to say “all my photography post”, all my posts about “macOS” etc. This is important when your website gets to 6000+ posts over a 15 year time frame.
@www.nitinkhanna.com Mine is far from a new install, but I just hit “New Post” yesterday, first in MarsEdit then in the WP console, and no category we ticked.
So interesting!!
